"Untitled" (Portrait of Ross in L.A.), 1991

"Candies individually wrapped in multicolored cellophane, endless supply.
Dimensions vary with installation; ideal weight 175 lbs...

Felix Gonzalez-Torres produced work of uncompromising beauty and simplicity, transforming the everyday into profound meditation on love and loss."

This piece is representative of Felix's partner, "...Ross Laycock, who died of an AIDS-related illness in 1991. The installation is comprised of 175 pounds of candy, corresponding to Ross's ideal body weight. Viewers are encouraged to take a piece of candy, the diminishing amount parallels to Ross's weight loss suffering prior to his death... the pile should be continuously replenished, thus metaphorically granting perpetual life."

{This is not about the photograph but the piece itself, which was far too impactful for me to just skip over. It needs to be acknowledged.}
